Acne is never in style. Breakouts chip away at self-confidence and prevent us from living the life we are meant for; proud of the skin we’re in.
Pimples are typically associated with puberty and the teenage years. Many young individuals assume they will never have another zit after the day they turn 20. These days acne plagues the young and old, male and female. Menopausal women have unsightly breakouts. Athletic men suffer with “backne”. New moms suffer with pimply cheeks and of course, our teens still hate the way acne compliments their braces.
Using topical treatments to help heal existing blemishes is one approach. At the Center for Advanced Medicine we aim to keep blemishes from even starting. We will treat your skin from the inside out as well as the outside in.
Potential causes for acne include hormonal imbalance, food allergies and intolerance, hypothyroidism, facial products, diet, stress, or gut dysbiosis. Sometimes acne is caused by a combination of these factors. We are committed to identifying the causes so that you can find a cure. We measure levels of sex and thyroid hormones, test stool, discuss your diet and the ways you manage stress.
Once we identify the cause of your acne we will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will bring bright, beautiful, clear skin. It may include an 8 day cleanse, hormone balancing supplements or medication, probiotics, or eliminating certain foods from your diet. As your gut heals and your liver is supported toxins will be easily eliminated from your body instead of being forced out of your skin in the form of acne.
The standard American diet is too high in calories, fat, salt and sugar. It is too low in complex carbohydrates, vegetables and fiber. Eating this way contributes to constipation causing a build up of acne causing hormones. Conventional or non-organic dairy contains hormones and antibiotics that also cause a build up of hormones and gut dysbiosis. Refined sugars and saturated fats worsen acne and should be either eliminated or significantly reduced. If you have tried antibiotic treatment for acne then establishing healthy gut flora through probiotic therapies will be essential to a holistic acne treatment plan.
